St Aloysius University ranked among India’s Greenest Universities

Mangaluru, July 30, 2026: St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, has added another milestone to its sustainability journey by securing the 23rd Rank nationally, 4th Rank in Karnataka, and earning a prestigious Gold Rating in the National Green University Ranking (NGUR) 2026, one of India’s most comprehensive sustainability assessment frameworks for higher education institutions.

The University achieved an overall score of 91 out of 100 following a rigorous, evidence-based evaluation conducted by Green Mentors, which assessed institutions on their demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability, climate action, governance, research, innovation, and community engagement.

The National Green University Ranking (NGUR) 2026 evaluates universities across ten core sustainability pillars, including Sustainability Governance & Leadership, Campus Biodiversity & Green Cover, Carbon & Climate Action, Green Infrastructure & Energy Efficiency, Research
& Innovation for Sustainability, Sustainability in Curriculum & Pedagogy, Water Management & Conservation, Sustainable Transportation, Waste Management & Circular Economy, and Community Engagement & Outreach. Unlike self-declared rankings, NGUR follows a transparent and evidence-driven methodology, examining institutional policies, sustainability reports, environmental audits, research publications, GIS mapping, annual reports, photographic documentation, and measurable environmental outcomes before awarding scores.

The recognition reflects St Aloysius University’s sustained efforts to integrate sustainability into every aspect of institutional functioning—from academic programmes and research to campus operations and community outreach. The University has consistently promoted environmental stewardship through renewable energy initiatives, biodiversity conservation, water management, waste reduction, sustainable infrastructure, and student-led environmental programmes. Expressing delight over the achievement, the University administration acknowledged the collective contribution of its faculty, researchers, administrative staff, students, alumni, and
support personnel in fostering a culture of sustainability and responsible environmental management.

The NGUR framework is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UNESCO Greening Higher Education Framework, and India’s national priorities on climate resilience, biodiversity conservation,
circular economy, and environmental governance.

Adding international significance to this accomplishment, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) has also been invited to participate in the 10th NYC Green School Conference 2026 in New York, where universities recognized under the National Green University Ranking will be
honoured before an international gathering of higher education leaders, policymakers, sustainability experts, researchers, and global partners. This achievement further strengthens St Aloysius University’s position as one of India’s leading institutions committed to sustainable development, environmental responsibility, and academic excellence, while inspiring future generations to build a greener and more resilient society.
